Rechargeable 9V's in gear

Fellow guitar guys and gals, we all love the convenience of plugging in musical devices, but there are times when it is far more convenient to use batteries. And far more convenient for our lowly musician wages to use rechargeables.

So, what all brands of chargers and rechargeable 9-volts have you had the most success with using in your wireless mics, in-ear systems, wireless systems, and stompboxes?

I'm trying to find the cheapest and most reliable solutions. Looks like Tenergy (on Amazon.com) and Rayovac have had the most positive reviews.

Apologies for the crosspost, but I need answers fast!

Soundgear SR700 now de-fretted

As a general rule I prefer fretless bass as a player, but most of the basses on sale these days have those confounded bits of metal in the way so when my lovely girl bought me a new bass earlier this year it came complete with frets.
Now this is not a big problem as it's a lovely, lovely instrument and for many things it makes no odds and in the case of playing metal the frets are really useful.
But as I don't play metal but do have to add the low end to people like Jo Lewis fretless is more what I'm after, so I decided I needed a fretless bass more than I need three electrics so one is now being sold.
Unfortunately the only fretless basses available in the price bracket available were, quite frankly, shonky.
Thus I took my trusty weapon to a local Luthier who, for the princely sum of £140 (including swanky new strings) took the frets out, replaced with strips of maple and then sanded, levelled and oiled.
I picked it up today and it is now even better than it was with frets on. I love my bass... not as much as I love my girl mind ;)

Wanted - Fretless four string

I'm after a fretless four string bass, ideally active with some form of two pickup config and a reasonably slim neck.
Any suggestions, or does anyone in the uk have something for sale?
Oh yes, and I'm ideally looking in the sub £300 mark, so second hand is better.

London Jazz Festival

We are going down to London for the Jazz Festival. Tomorrow, we will be seeing Stanley Clarke (with Chick Corea and Lenny White) and Victor Wooten (with Bela Fleck and Reggie Wooten) in one gig!!! Also later, Allen Toussaint, and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Marcus Miller is playing next Sunday, but we won't be staying that long. Shame, that would be a hat trick!

Help a starter out?

Hey everyone! I'm new the community and am interested in playing bass guitar. It's been something I've been wanting to do for a while now, but recently I've been thinking of actually getting started.

I'm a little nervous to make my first trip to my local music store, as I want to be at least a little bit educated on what kind of bass I want (and can realistically handle/pay for). I'm small for my age (I'm 19 but only 4'10" and with small hands), so I'm guessing I might need a shorter scale, though I'd like to see if I can handle a standard 34" scale first. I'm especially interested in learning slap bass aside from playing jazz and rock.

So far with my options, I've been considering an Ibanez GSM20, a Squier Jazz Bass, or a Squier Bronco Bass. I was wondering if you guys could give me some personal opinions on these basses, the brands in general, or even other suggestions to a good starter bass? Also, since I don't want to end up getting extra equipment that I don't need, if there are any suggestions of what else I should get to get started would be great.

All help is appreciated! :) Thanks in advance.

Ibanez soundgear SR700 - mini review

Well I've had my new shiny bass since Monday, and last night it did it's first band practice so I thought I'd let you all know how the super slink bass is fairing.

First up, if your a Precision bass fan you're not going to like the SR's as a range as they make ya average Jazz bass feel a bit clumpy. So if you don't like slim necks on a bass this is not the bass for you.
Quick overview. The SR700 is the top of the normal (non prestige) soundgear range. It's a bolt on neck, mahogany body with maple top. It's made in that well known guitar making nation of Indonesia (?) and retails in the UK for about £500. Electric's are two bartolini humbucking pickups coupled to a three band eq. For more info look em up on the net.
So, playability: Now the soundgear basses have always had slim necks and the latest range is no exception. For me and my undersized digits this thing is ideal. The action is quite low out of the box and it's fantastically easy to play.
Sound: Now it's not the loudest bass play acoustically in the world. Next to the Aria it's replacing it's positively quite. I'm wondering if this is an Ibanez thing as my SA, although still nice sounding, is also not very loud. Anway, the sound is crisp, full, generally good. In comparison to the old roadstar II bass I used to own it's not got the dep woody tone, but has a ton more clarity and punch. Just to play on ya knee this is a really nice bass; comfortable, easy to play with a good sound.
Plugged in this bass gets even better. The active EQ means you could leave your amp eq relatively flat and work the sound from the bass if you needed to. It really does produce a very good range of good sounds. It's always going to sound more modern than a passive bass but it'll come pretty close without too much faff. The EQ is also strong enough, and easy enough to use, such that you can tweak your sound once the rest of the band are up and running to allow your sound to find a place in the mix.
Build quality, as you'd expect, is superb. Finish is pretty flawless and it all feels very well bolted together.
All round this is far and away the best bass I've ever owned and an absolute joy to play.
In comparison to my last 'descent' bass, which was a similar priced J&D brothers through neck bass this blows it out of the water in every direction.
I don't think I can really say anything bad about this bass, for me it's just ideal, plays well, comfortable to play sitting or standing, sounds good, well built... not sure about the thin laminate bit of maple on the head stock I suppose :)

Comparing sets

I'm looking at buying my very first bass guitar. I tried to play guitar, however my fingers were too short to play a lot of chords. Not to mention that I dislike chords in general and remembering which strings to play and which not to play. I'm currently thinking of getting a packaged set, however I'm not sure which one to get. I'm trying to get some advice which is a better pick.

This Ibanez

Or this Epiphone

I've heard a lot of good things about Ibanez, especially for beginners, and it's about $11 cheaper. (Given that's not much cheaper, but I'm tight on money in general) However the Epiphone got a higher rating online and so I'm wondering which is the better buy.

Any input would be wonderful! Thank you so much!

(Also, this is being used as my "research". My dad refuses to let me get a bass without a lot of research. So extra thanks.)

Any ideas?

Hullo, new 'round here; but nonetheless, wondered if you lot could help me out...

Yup quite, I've been playing bass for 2 or so years now; not amazing, but not awful either. But recently I splashed out some birthday money on a 5-stringed acoustic by Michael Kelly, look HERE. And I love just jamming with it anyhow (messing in scales, with a drum synth or goofing along to songs). But so far the only formal tabs I've bothered learning are some by the Violent Femmes; they're the only band with an acoustic bassist that I know really. (Though I have hunted down all the moments Steve Harris uses one and learned those!).
So bassically I was wondering if you guys know any good bands that have acoustic bassists; I don't care if they're metal, rock, bluegrass, whatever; but it 'would' be nice to know some more.
Also, just any ideas on style, music you think might help (regardless of what bass is used) or whatever ye think might be useful to learning this great bass variation. Being a fairly unusual instrument, it's been hard to get any advice or imput, but if you could throw any scraps my way, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Superb_fail

Just to share a bit of knowledge.

Best thing I’ve found for hosting music is soundclick.com.
Not as well know or popular as myspace but much easier to post links to individual songs.

The following are my bands re-hashed demo of that old Priest classic Living after midnight which was recorded in a studio, mix down by a stoned engineer with everything panned central so I’ve added some extra rhythm guitars.

Next is the first thing I did on my mac at home called Mutual Respect which is all my own work. The guitars on this were DI’d so not so great, but as a first effort I’m quite proud.

Help.

So I been playing bass for a while now, I suck at it but thats besides the point. I have always played it tuned regularly like E A D G, but as of reacent I been wanting to play it really low, DOOM-ish you can say, a whole step lower, Electric Wizard fucking Saint Vitus, Pentagram type shit, so I was wondering how you go about doing that? Does a regular tuner work for that?(I tried but I don't know) thank you.

Bass MIDI converter & BOSS Bass synthesizer.

Greetings,

I am looking to buy gear to basically be able to plug my bass into a MIDI input of my sound card, for then being able to use my bass as a MIDI controller for Reason. However, I am not sure what is the best combo for me and I would really appreciate some advice. The bass I use is a (5-string) Washburn XB-500 (active pick-ups). Where should I look? I really don't know where to start.

Also, I am wondering if any of you use the BOSS bass synthesizer, if you could share your experience.

THANKS in advance for any feedback!

x-posted to bass_players + bass_guitar

bass cab issues

I'm running a fender mustang bass through an Ampeg pb-250 head into an Avatar 2x10 cab rated @ 500 watts. Whenever I first turn on the amp and play, I get a nasty distorted overtone out of the cab. It's not the horn. It's certainly coming from the speakers. The sound isn't completely distorted, just some frequencies. This goes away after about 10 minutes of playing time. Problem is, 10 minutes is 1/4 of a set! I can't have crappy sounding bass for a quarter of the set. The same thing happened with my '68 Fender Bassman head so it's certainly the cabinet.

What could this be due to? Any quick fixes?

Lem-oil

I got some Kyser Lem-oil a little while back, and used it to clean the fretboard when I was re-stringing it the other day. I got the bass second hand a couple of years ago and had never cleaned it, and the frets were looking pretty grubby.

However, I put the oil on with a soft cloth, then spent the next 20min or so trying to get it to wipe clean! Always there was black dirt or something rubbing off. I gave up eventually, when less black was coming off than initially. It's not varnished or lacquered that I know of (it's a 5-string Ibanez BTB), so I assume it must be dirt.

Anyway, now the fretboard is looking rather odd - the wood grain is full of grey-ish white stuff, which shows up against the very dark wood. It looks either like there is stuff in the grain, or it's extremely dried out.

Have any of you experienced this problem, and do you know any way to make the fretboard nice again?
